SAAL Update - 2 November 2023 - Flinders 800m Handicaps

2 Nov 2023 by Jenny Poole

Following declaration of handicaps for the 800m events at Flinders the SAAL Committee became aware that a number Athletes had been handicapped inadvertently outside of the published rules of the SAAL.

Whilst this was done in order to make those athletes more competitive more quickly, the Committee was concerned that handicapping outside of the rules created a precedent.

Accordingly, the handicappers have agreed to re-allocate marks for this event to the runners concerned. The particular rules concerned the application of the maximum allowable lift of 15m.

As a consequence of this situation, the League has taken the distance handicapper’s advice and is now in the process of reviewing current maximum increases that will apply for longer distance races.

Athletes who have been allocated incorrect handicaps will be advised directly.

The SAAL apologises for any inconvenience.
